History

Born in the Amatitán and Tequila region in the early 20th century, cantaritos take their name from the small clay pot that keeps the drink cold and lends it a mineral note. Today they are a festive icon of the Magical Town of Tequila.

  2. 2

    Fill the pot with ice.

  3. 3

Pour in the tequila and the orange, lime, and grapefruit juices.

  4. 4

Top off with grapefruit soda and stir gently.

  5. 5

Garnish with citrus slices and serve immediately.

Cooking tips

  • Use a glazed clay mug certified food-safe and ice made from drinking water.

Technique and preparation

What to check during preparation

Use a glass or jar certified for food contact. Combine juices and tequila before soda to distribute acidity. Coat only part of the rim if you want the option of a sip without salt. Add soda last and stir gently to retain bubbles. For an alcohol-free adaptation, omit tequila and adjust the volume with more soda; it will be a different version of the drink.
